Reversible Coat
I have always been fascinated by reversible fabrics. The first free pattern I ever offered in the Knitability News was the Reversible Afghan pattern. Athough much of my focus over recent months has been on entrelac, reversible patterns, fabrics and garments continue to occupy my thoughts.
Mystery Knit-a-long
The first
knit-a-long (KAL) hosted by Knitability was in fact, a mystery KAL. Participants were not given all the information before starting the project and so choices had to be made without complete knowledge of what was coming next. Some found this frustrating, others exciting, but the final result was fabulous creativity.
Since the conclusion of that successful KAL, I have wanted to host another but finding the topic and designing the project that will work for this format can be a challenge. But I believe this project meets all the requirements, educational, creative and functional.
In this project, as before, we will develop our own sizing and pattern, create a variety of reversible fabrics and learn how to approach the challenging aspects of reversible garments like seams and ends. As with all Knitability KALs, the Mystery KAL will be educational in nature starting at the basics and building to more complex techniques. Only basic skills are required, but you will need to bring a sense of adventure!
Lessons will begin in September starting with planning the design and calculating yardage requirements. A new lesson will be delivered each month following for a total of 9 lessons. Key topics covered are:
- Basic design instruction
- Various Reversible fabrics
- Understanding Charts
- Managing Ends
- Creating Reversible Seams
- Picking up stitches with no "wrong side"
- Cast ons and Bind offs
- Reversible Edgings
- Creating your own Reversible Pattern
Lessons will be presented in the standard Knitability booklet format of 5.5" x 8.5". The first lesson will be available on September 15, 2009. Participants can choose one of three options, with varying prices:
- Lessons sent via e-mail in a PDF format which can be printed by the participant on standard 8.5" x 11" paper and folded into the booklet.
- The same as above, but an appropriate sized binder and sheet protectors will be sent to the participant to be used for storage of all the materials.
- Each lesson, along with the sheet protectors and binder will be sent US Postal Service.
All participants will be invited to join a private Yahoo Group for ongoing discussion, questions and answers. Ravelry members will be encouraged to join our Ravelry group. If you have other questions, check out of KAL FAQ page. |
